The world’s largest CO2 carriers will be equipped with Svanehøj pumps

Svanehøj has added another significant order to its strong track record in CO2 pumps. As a subcontractor to LGE, Svanehøj will deliver cargo and booster pumps for two state-of-the-art LCO2 carriers with a cargo capacity of 22,000 m³ each.

Earlier this year, Babcock's LGE business won a contract from a ship owner in South Korea to deliver the cargo handling systems for two 22,000 m³ LCO2 carriers. Now, LGE has chosen Svanehøj as the pump supplier for the two vessels, the largest LCO2 carriers ever ordered globally.

- Over the years, Svanehøj has been a trusted partner for LGE on several cargo gas projects for VLGC's and VLEC's. And the fact that we also have LCO2 pumps in operation has further convinced LGE that our deepwell pump is the best solution for this project, says Nithin Sudarsan, Sales Director (Gas) in Svanehøj.

The project signifies a significant development in the design of LCO2 carriers, being the first to incorporate LGE's new ecoCO2® cargo handling system. It is the world's first cargo handling and reliquefication system for a low-pressure cargo tank design. The solution for the two new LCO2 carriers is characterized by high flexibility, enabling the carriage of not only CO2 but also LPG and ammonia.

For each ship, Svanehøj will deliver a scope of 6* DW cargo pumps and 2* booster pumps.

More than 20 years of experience in CO2 pumps

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is described as one of the most promising technologies for reducing CO2 emissions in the hard-to-abate sectors. In this context, LCO2 carriers will be essential in transporting liquefied CO2 to depleted oil and gas reservoirs or other deep places where it is stored.

Over 20 years ago, Svanehøj delivered its first deepwell cargo pump solution for an LCO2 carrier. As one of the few marine pump manufacturers with actual experience in CO2 pumping systems, the company is already firmly positioned as a supplier to the expanding CCS market. In 2022 and 2023, Svanehøj has strengthened its position as a market leader with cargo pump orders for the Northern Lights CCS project in Norway.
