Engage to sustain: Svanehøj takes on the Scope 3 challenge

To us, ESG is about becoming an inspiration for others to follow. We have already set a target for reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, and in 2023 we are establishing our Scope 3 baseline year. Our target regarding Scope 3 is to ensure that 25% of all strategic suppliers are calculating their Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2025.

Scope 3 emissions represent the largest portion of a company's carbon footprint. According to various studies, Scope 3 emissions account for 70-80% or even more of a company's total GHG inventory. It is, therefore, of great importance to include Scope 3 in the ESG strategy. We have already initiated dialogue with our strategic suppliers, and through webinars and questionnaires, we are collecting data for our supplier assessment.

At Svanehøj, we commit to our purpose. We want to accelerate the green transition, and we dare to be ambitious. That is why we reach out to our suppliers so that together we can help improve the world for the benefit of future generations.

Our initial screening shows that five of the Scope 3 sub-categories comprise almost 99% of our total Scope 3 GHG emissions: “Purchased goods & services”, “upstream transportation & distribution”, “business travel”, “use of sold products”, and “end-of-life treatment of sold products”.

To effectively address our Scope 3 emissions, we recognize the need to differentiate between upstream and downstream activities. Our analysis has revealed that a significant portion of our value-chain emissions stems from the use of sold products. In response, we will adopt a two-pronged approach. By handling up- and downstream emissions distinguishably, we believe we can effectively tackle the different sources of Scope 3 emissions within our value chain. This targeted approach will allow us to prioritize actions that contribute to our overall ESG goals.
