It is never too late to pursue a career in the maritime world
Meet our interns, Tomas, and Jonas, who both have embarked on a career as a marine engineer despite originating from distinct professional backgrounds.
If you dream of a future as a marine engineer but need the craftsmanship skills required to enter the bachelor program, Martec offers an attractive opportunity. Young people with a Higher Examination Program diploma can be admitted to the Technology Management and Marine Engineering program at Martec by attending nine months of workshop school followed by a nine-month internship.
Jonas Lindh, 40, and Tomas Ingi Nielsen, 21, have chosen to pursue that option. They have both been with Svanehøj since April in an internship designed to equip them with the necessary competencies.
- During a job fair at Martec, I spoke to Svanehøj about the marine engineer education and the possibility of an internship. I liked the technical aspect and the prospect of working with both hands and mind. This is something I have already experienced in my first six months here, says Jonas Lindh.
Interns are highly valued in Svanehøj
Jonas Lindh has been a music teacher since 2012, but over the years, it became clear that he wanted to pursue a different career path. Thus, he applied for the workshop school at Martec to become a marine engineer.
- I am fortunate to be involved in various assignments here in Svanehøj. My contributions are valued, and I feel consistently challenged, says Jonas Lindh.
Tomas Ingi Nielsen shares a similar experience. He possesses a graduate certificate from an Upper Secondary School and has some brief experience in sales. Having some knowledge about the marine engineer education offered by Martec, he decided to apply but realized that he needed hands-on experience.
- I am delighted with my choice after spending approximately half a year here. Svanehøj places significant value on its interns, allowing us to work on diverse assignments across functions that directly relate to our educational pursuits. This experience has opened my eyes to the wide range of opportunities associated with a career as a marine engineer, says Tomas Ingi Nielsen.
As part of the ESG strategy Svanehøj works actively to provide quality jobs and training opportunities for students. Here, the close cooperation with Martec is of great importance. Earlier this year, Svanehøj committed to an agreement on internship guarantee for the students on Martec’s new bachelor’s degree program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
