Exploring new approaches to increasing workforce diversity

For the past few months, Svanehøj has collaborated with Ea Rasmussen, a student from University College Nordjylland (UCN), to help find new ways to increase diversity in manufacturing companies.

Ea Rasmussen is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. In her bachelor's project, she explores how manufacturing companies can attract women and young professionals to vocational jobs in various production positions.

Ea’s collaboration with Svanehøj began at the DSE career fair, arranged by The Students’ Business Relations, where she engaged in an inspiring dialogue with Svanehøj representatives about how to increase diversity in manufacturing companies.

In the Danish maritime industry, only 2 of 10 employees are women, according to a report by Danish Maritime and Danish Ports. Svanehøj’s own demographics have historically mirrored this trend, with 85 % of the workforce currently being male. However, Svanehøj recognizes the need for a more diverse workforce and has increased its focus on attracting more women to Svanehøj.

- When we welcome a more diverse workforce, we’re not just creating a better workplace; we’re building a stronger future. At Svanehøj, we know that diversity strengthens teamwork, enhances problem-solving, and fosters a more positive environment. I’m passionate about challenging outdated stereotypes in our industry. It’s not just about gender. We’re committed to ensuring that everyone has the chance to explore careers options in production and to breaking down the barriers that may hold them back from saying yes, says Mikkel Bülow Bundgaard Sørensen, Head of Production at Svanehøj.

How to create a diverse workforce in manufacturing companies

According to Ea’s findings, the key to attracting a diverse workforce lies in breaking stereotypes and engaging with the new generations on their preferred digital platforms. Her recommendations include:

1. Engaging on social media platforms

To attract younger talent, it is essential to connect with them in a relatable and authentic way. By showcasing production related career opportunities through engaging content, companies can challenge stereotypes and inspire curiosity about careers in production.

2. Building early connections

Career decisions are often shaped long before students make their first educational choice. Ea recommends reaching students at the earliest possible stage to introduce them to the career opportunities in production companies like Svanehøj. This includes highlighting the benefits of vocational education and training, such as job security, career opportunities, and a balanced work-life dynamic.

3. Creating hands-on learning opportunities

Another recommendation is establishing master-apprenticeship programs. By allowing young people to start their education within a company, businesses can demystify vocational training and provide a seamless transition into the workforce, making these career paths more accessible and attractive.

Promoting vocational careers is key

A recurring theme in Ea’s findings is the importance of fostering pride in vocational careers, which is also a focus at Svanehøj. Behind the production of every high-quality pump, valve, and gauge are dedicated employees whose commitment sets us apart in the gas and maritime sectors.

The concept of ‘Pumpeproffer’ (‘Pump Pros’) is integral to achieving this. This simple yet powerful concept captures the approach to each and every task in Svanehøj: getting the right things done in the right way, taking pride in what you do, and striving for the highest possible standard. It’s more than a concept; it’s work-culture that infuses every aspect of the way of working at Svanehøj production.

We aim to be at the forefront of innovation. With newly established in-house training facilities, the company can organize training and upskilling effectively, offer hands-on experience, and boost technical skills among employees.

At Svanehøj, our most valuable assets are our employees, and we proudly count 400+ dedicated people on a common mission to help our customers and partners speed up the transition to green and renewable energies.
